Estamos en El Calafate

El Calafate was a great place, made even nicer by our cute airbnb 🙂 When the sun was shining after our days out and about – we loved sitting on the steps watching the world go by while drinking mate 🙂

El Calafate centre was buzzing… Most visitors to Patagonia end up in El Calafate as everyone wants to go on a day trip to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier – and we were no different – but that’s for another post 😉

When we weren’t visiting the glacier, we easily managed to entertain ourselves, as there is a great nature reserve in El Calafate called Nimez Lagoon and we really liked it there 🙂 There were heaps of birds and it was just a really relaxing place to be…

Nimez Lagoon.
Heaps of flamingos hanging out at the lagoon.
Flamingos flying en masse is a pretty spectacular sight 🙂
A Cinereous Harrier.
A Spectacled tyrant.. I loved these birds 🙂
We might have seen Andean Ruddy Ducks before – but hey with a bill this colour I couldnt resist a picture 🙂
A Correndera Pipit
A Long-tailed meadowlark

El Calafate was also good for eating and drinking 🙂 It had a great bakery (it probably had more than one, but after finding an awesome one why move on!?!). I honestly think I found the best cake in the world here… ricotta cheese, raisins and black sugar… it might not sound that delicious but trust me it WAS…. We also tried the infamous calafate berry – okay so it wasn’t in its pure form, but calafate gelato works for me! And then there was the craft beer 🙂 🙂

This is calafate berry growing in the reserve… I wasnt allowed to pick it and eat it though as I was in a reserve…
PB indulges in an IPA brewed in El Calafate 🙂

What can I say? When you have a place with birds, good food and drink, and an impressive glacier nearby – you can see why it’s a popular tourist destination 🙂
