CC’s mum goes sightseeing in La Serena!

CC’s mum enjoyed her bus ride to La Serena as the cactuses zooming by out of the window were in bloom and she’d never seen so many cactuses before…! BUT… however much she enjoyed the scenery, she was relieved when she finally arrived in La Serena and could get off the bus (there’s only so much sitting down CC’s mum likes to do!!!)

After a long bus journey there’s nothing quite like a nice walk… so after checking into our Airbnb apartment we headed out to the beach ๐Ÿ™‚ The beach is home to a beautiful squareย lighthouseย and was a perfect spot for a sunset stroll…

From the beach you can see mighty town of Coquimbo – the location of a future daytrip – which you can read about soon!
A beautiful beach for a stroll before the sun sets.

CC’s mum likes birds too (quite a relief for us!), and PB started a bird list for her too – so that she could keep track of what she’d seen… here are 2 of the fine specimens she saw in La Serena…

A long-tailed meadowlark
A beautiful hummingbird… this obviously isn’t the official name – but we never did figure out which type of hummingbird it was…

The town of La Serena was quite a pleasant place… although we would have liked a little more sunshine… in spite of the weather forecast telling us it was sunny in La Serena – it just wasn’t! ๐Ÿ™ย  …and the clouds seemed to linger over the town ALL the time ๐Ÿ™

The main things to see in the heart of La Serena were some old churches, the main square, and the market…

Plaza de Armas (the main square in La Serena) with the cathedral in the background.

There was also a very nice Japanese Garden on the edge of town… and in spite of the grey sky and not so warm weather, it was a relaxing place to eat a delicious Ligua sweet treat, and also to add more birds to CC’s mum’s bird list… ๐Ÿ™‚

Given Chile’s love of Nescafe – our ‘coffee and cake breaks’ have been reduced to ‘cake breaks’… today we had sweet treats from Ligua ๐Ÿ™‚

Being in La Serena also gave CC’s mum a chance to try more delicious Chilean foods, and get a little bit closer to completing her food challenge! Here are some pictures of CC’s mum enjoying some Chilean delicacies…

CC’s mum eyes up her next two Chilean delights – Bilz and Pap – with a little suspicion due to the bright colours!
CC’s mum tries a Pisco Sour… the national drink of Chile… again, note the nervous look ๐Ÿ™‚ This time due to the alcohol content of the drink….

All in all, CC’s mum’s stay in La Serena was pretty enjoyable – the town was nice, and the day trips were excellent… all that was needed was a little more sunshine…
