Estamos en Pucón

Pucón – our last stop in the Chilean lakes – belongs in the list of ‘firsts’ for our trip in South America…

Pucón will always be remembered (by me anyway) as ‘the first time that we didn’t venture out of our accommodation in a 24 hour period…’

What can I say?  ….maybe we are just big wusses… but sometimes rain just gets the better of you….!

When it wasn’t raining (it rained a lot while we were there) Pucón was an awesome place to be… It’s located on the shores of Lake Villarica, and there is easy access to a small bay which is perfect for a relaxing afternoon waterside snack. There’s also a huge volcanic sand beach which was a great place for a stroll… especially as it was out of season… I’m not sure how easy it would have been to stroll on the beach in summer…

A perfect snack spot!

CC strolling on the sandy lakeside beach (she’s smiling as they’ve created a nice boardwalk for her… so no sand in her shoes today!!!)

The main square in Pucón is also quite picturesque… apparently you can see Villarica volcano from the square on a clear day… unfortunately for us it was covered in cloud… no volcano sighting for us 🙁

Pucón’s picturesque main square…
PB has to make do with a photo in front of a picture of Villarica volcano – as the real thing refuses to come out from behind the clouds…

BUT…..We didn’t have to wait too long for the cloud to lift…. and on our second day in Pucón we got to see Villarica volcano… 🙂 🙂 🙂

An early morning shot of Villarica volcano…
Another early morning shot of the volcano on our way to the bus station…

The next time that we saw Villarica volcano from Pucón, it was much clearer as the early morning haze had lifted 🙂

Villarica volcano on a clear day 🙂 Don’t tell me there are too many volcano pictures – that’s just not possible…
It was such a clear day,  you could even see smoke coming out of the top of the volcano…

The smoke from the volcano didn’t worry us though… we knew that we were safe as Pucón has an alert system in place for the volcano…

Volcano alert system… green – no worries you don’t have to stop drinking your beer, orange – don’t drink too many beers you have to be ready to move if necessary, and red – neck your beer and get out of there!!! 🙂

I do think though that if I saw the volcano looking like it does in the ‘red’ picture, then I wouldn’t need an alert to let me know that it was a good time to leave the area!

If only we’d had a beer we could have kept drinking….

Pucón also had easy access to the Huerquehue National Park – so not only could we hang out in the town itself, but we also got to do some fab day trips from Pucón – more about that in another post…
